There are a total of 24 combinations of the left hand fingers that can be applied to the three preceding exercises to further develop double picking and left hand technique. I have laid them out so that you may practice four of these combinations each week over a span of six weeks. Begin each practice period with the four exercises you happen to be working on. It is not necessary to dwell on these combinations each day; it is the fact that you are practicing them over a six-week period that will improve your technique.
Week 1 | 1 2 3 4 | 2 1 3 4 | 3 1 2 4 | 4 2 3 1 |
Week 2 | 1 2 4 3 | 2 1 4 3 | 3 1 4 2 | 4 2 1 3 |
Week 3 | 1 3 2 4 | 2 4 1 3 | 3 2 1 4 | 4 1 3 2 |
Week 4 | 1 3 4 2 | 2 4 3 1 | 3 2 4 1 | 4 1 2 3 |
Week 5 | 1 4 2 3 | 2 3 1 4 | 3 4 1 2 | 4 3 1 2 |
Week 6 | 1 4 3 2 | 2 3 4 1 | 3 4 2 1 | 4 3 2 1 |
When playing these combinations, keep your fingers low to the fretboard. Don't let your fingers bounce up after they have sounded a note.
